The Zonta Club of Charles County ( is a 501(c)4 organization — a member club of Zonta International (  Our mission is to advance the status of women and one of our areas of focus is violence against women.  As one of our local service projects, for the last 9 years, we’ve hosted a RAVE Walk — Rape and Violence Eradication Walk.  The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness of gender violence in our community while we raise funds to combat and treat it.  Some of the local agencies we’ve supported through our walk are Center for Abused Persons (CAP) which is the only agency in our county that serves domestic violence and rape victims;  funded several scholarships for nurses at the local hospital to attend Forensic Nurse Examiner training so they can treat rape victims; and support scholarships at the local community college to help domestic violence and rape victims obtain education and training to get back on their feet.

2013 will be our 10th Anniversary of the walk, and we have so many exciting plans!  First, to add a Walk a Mile feature in order to attract more men.  We’ll still host the 3 mile walk for ladies, but the men in heels will only have to complete 1! Our ultimate goal is to grow the walk (along with some other fundraisers we’re working on) to a level to be able to support a new safe house in the county — a place where survivors and their children can live and obtain services while they get back on their feet.  Right now, there is only one such location in our entire county, and it can only serve 3 families at a time.  We are working with the county to locate another property, that we hope to call Gayle’s House.  We are also building relationships and agreements with other local service agencies and women’s groups like ours.  We’re really excited and energized and focused!!
